Recently we have been creating Imformation reports on Dung Beetles.
Here is mine:
Dung Beetles
Did you know that Dung Beetles are the strongest animal in the world? Dung Beetles can push 1,141 times their body weight, which is the same as a human pulling 6 full double decker buses.
Dung Beetles have many wonderful habitats. They love to live in warm places especially grassland, forests and deserts. They hate living in the Arctic regions, because of the cold weather.
Doesn’t the name Dung Beetles give it away? Of course their diet is dung! Dung Beetles eat undigested food that animals don’t eat. The dung is very nutritious. Larvae eat the solid dung but as for adult Dung Beetles they like to sick the moisture out. Yuck!
Dung Beetles have many unbelievable features. They each have 6 legs, a small strong amour like body, they each grow from 0.5com to at least 5cm long, they have a strange shaped shovel head, they can live up to 3yrs in the wild, and Dung Beetles also have wings. Male Dung Beetles have horns to fight other males to show of at the female.
Dung Beetles have a very interesting reproduction system. Firstly the Male and the Female work together to dig a hole to put a ball of dung in. The Female then lays the eggs. The baby Dung Beetles hatch out of the eggs, they then have to eat their way out of the poo ball. Adult Female Dung Beetles can lay from 10-80 eggs in their lifetime.
And that’s the weird life of a Dung Beetle!
